The historic Islamia College Peshawar was closed for a week after violent protest by the students and clash with police on Tuesday.
The violence left a teacher and five students injured, police said.
The violence occurred when police tried to disperse the protesting students.
When the students pelted stones at the police, they fired tear-gas shells into the crowd. More than 20 students were arrested.
College authorities ordered students to vacate the hotels and the college by 5pm, and upon review of the tense atmosphere, closed the campus till January 17th.
The students of intermediate classes of pre-medical, pre-engineering and arts groups were staging a protest against college authorities for barring the absentee students from appearing in the upcoming examinations, sources said.
The college authorities decided not to send the forms of the students to the board for the exam because of attendance shortage. College authorities have asked students to make sure they have 75 per cent attendance till January 30, which is necessary for appearing in the exam, the sources said.
Protesting students said that with the college closed in protest against the kidnapping of Vice-Chancellor Dr Ajmal Khan, it was almost impossible to fulfil the 75 per cent attendance requirement.
