PM Gilani announces labour policy 2010

Gilani said the minimum wage will be raised from Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000.

ISLAMABAD: Addressing a labour day convention in Islamabad, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani announced the new labour law 2010, and said that the Universal Registration System will help workers reap maximum benefits.

Gilani said the minimum wage will be raised from Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000. The new labour policy will be implemented from June 1.

He said all industrial and agricultural companies will pay their employees via cheques or directly through bank accounts. Additionally, an old age retirement fund would be introduced for labourers over 50 years of age.

The prime minister said a Labour Information System will be formed, as committees would be set up at all levels to implement the new labour laws.

He congratulated all labourers, and said the labour policy 2010 was the fulfillment of Benazir Bhutto's vision.

Meanwhile, rallies were taken out, seminars arranged and speeches given to observe Labour Day in different cities of Pakistan.

In Lahore, Jamaat-e-Islami, Khaksar Tehreek, Labour party, and several labour unions took out rallies at Mall Road to express solidarity with the labour class.

Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Labour union took out a major rally in Hyderabad. The rally was taken out from Labour Hall and ended at press club Hyderabad.

Several labour unions took out over fifty rallies in Faisalabad. The major demonstration in the city was arranged by the Pakistan Workers Federation at the Zila Council Chowk.

Labourers demanded the government to implement labour laws and ensure registration of all workers with the Social Security Department.

Khalil ur Rehman | 14 years ago | Reply this is light of hope for poor workers as they spent their lives with minimum wage i.e 6000/= since last year , however minimum wages should be Rs.8000/= Normally such type of workers are doing overtime and their take home is around Rs.10,000/=

Its mean Rs.7000 over 5 people is equal to Rs.1400 Per month and Rs.46 Per day. and tell us our government to labour which place where labour can eat easily three time meal a day in Rs.46 its mean Rs.15 per time our government should feel sham and should took petty on poor people of pakistan. all basic needs will be pending if people can use their daily wage on eating. so I think we should pray from our God. we cannot leave us alone in pakistan under such government

Muhammad Ali | 14 years ago | Reply As announced by Govt. the maximum age limit for OLD age beneficiary is reduced from 55 yrs to 50 years. are all the above 50 years age who hold the EOBI Card would be eligible for pension ?

Dr. Ghulam Murtaza Khuhro | 14 years ago | Reply Although, fixing minimum wage at Rs. 7000 and its payment through cheque is slightly positive step, however, it can only help wage worker survive at near-animal level whereas any working age person- male or female- should be treated as human resource and it is constitutional, social, economic, moral and religious responsibility of powers-that-be to create an environment to ensure to raise the capacity of a every person to the level where a person could be treated and employed as human resource contributing to the meaningful increase in GDP of the country. Is it idealistic demand? It would seem idealistic to only those economist and policy makers who still talk of decreasing poverty by year2030 unmindful of changes taking place on the world stage, for they continue to live in past and are unable to see in the future. Ever- expanding horizons of revolution in communication technology and other innovations have made it possible to universalize the accessibility of the gains of human civilization. In fact, doing little is very dangerous thing. Something is marginally better than nothing. It is to time to do the optimum.

Nadir El Edroos | 14 years ago | Reply Previously the government set Rs 6400 as minimum wage and most employers have shy'd away from paying that to begin with. Increasing the minimum wage to Rs 7000 without elaborating a mechanism to enforce the said law, merely adds "minimum wage" to the list of government talking points. Not to mention that a wage set at Rs. 7000 would hardly meet the basic requirement of even a small family. Rs. 7000 over 4 weeks works out to about Rs. 1750 a week, or 250 per day. For a family of five that works out to Rs. 50 per day! Its an insult to "Benazir's Vision" to claim that somehow these measures improves the stock of our nations labourers.
