Convicted: Extortionist jailed for five years

KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) sentenced on Friday an extortionist to five years in jail. The judge found the suspect, Samiuddin, said to be associated with one of the several criminal gangs operating in Lyari, as guilty of demanding protection money from an iron trader by threatening his life in Sharifabad in September, 2014. The ATC-II judge pronounced the verdict after recording evidence of witnesses and final arguments from both the sides. A case was registered under sections 384 (punishment for extortion) and 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or of grievous hurt) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, on the complaint of the victim at Sharifabad police station.
