Begging for mercy with chopped hands

Letter December 31, 2015
The powerful elite of this country can cut off the hands of labour and then compensate them to get away with the crime

KARACHI: The powerful elite of this country can cut off the hands of labour for refusing to work without wages. It can then use the great Islamic legal provision to compensate the victim and get away scot-free.

Engrossed in the season of great extravagance, obscenely lavish weddings, ostentatious meals and costly colourful costumes, does this mindless society even have time to hold the prime minister and the Punjab chief minister accountable? Will we push for land reforms to get rid of the powerful wadera? Will no one in Pakistan speak on behalf of the 16-year-old Abu Bakar? Or, are we all like the barbarian, hand-cutting landlord, Rana Israr?
