Former Pakistan World cup winning captain Imran Khan has been appointed as the mentor of Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Peshawar Zalmi.

Imran who is now the chief of a political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), will return to cricketing activities after a break of more than two decades as he will mentor the Shahid Afridi-led team.

Peshawar Zalmi has picked Shahid Afridi as their icon player, for whom they had to pay $75,000 to Islamabad United for having the first pick in the icon player category selection.

The Shahid Afridi-led team will also have the services of Umar Gul, Imran Khan Jr, West Indian big hitting all-rounder Darren Sammy, left-arm fast bowlers Wahab Riaz and Junaid Khan, former T20 captain Muhammad Hafeez and explosive Bangaldesh opener Tamim Iqbal.

Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi said that he is pleased with the team selection, and remains optimistic that his franchise will do well in the inaugural edition of the PSL.

"We are pleased with our selections for Peshawar Zalmi," said Javed Afridi.

"The team is a blend of some fantastic T20 players and Zalmis. The Zalmis are the young unsung heroes of KPK who have been included in the squad like Taj Wali, Israrullah and Imran Khan Junior.

"We hope to deliver to the best of our abilities in the tournament. The real work I feel starts now."

The tournament will begin in February next year, where five teams will participate and the final will be played on February 24 at Dubai Cricket Stadium.
