Nearly 1,000 died this year in accidents

As many as 959 people had died in Lahore until December 15 this year in road accidents, building collapses and fires or by drowning.


According to police, Rescue 1122 and Edhi, 2,872 people received injuries in these accidents. Fifty people, including 18 women, committed suicide over the period.

Fire

In 2,814 fire incidents, 53 people died and 118 were injured.

Six siblings between two and eight years of age had died in a fire that broke out in a house in Shadbagh on May 17. On August 11, a person died and 16 others were injured when a fire broke out at Golden Plaza in Ichhra. Five workers had died when an oil tanker caught fire in Hadiara on November 9. Five labourers died from suffocation when a fire broke out at a garments plaza in Johar Town on December 5.

Roof Collapses

In 76 roof collapse incidents, 138 people died and 349 were injured.

On January 14, seven people were killed and 20 injured when the roof of Faizan Baqnuet Hall in Shadbagh caved in.

Three children died when the roof of a house caved in in Bhati Gate area on June 15. On July 18, a seven-storey under-construction building had collapsed in Rang Mahal leaving seven people injured.  On March 1, seven people were killed and five were injured when a two-storey building collapsed in the cantonment area. As many as 10 workers were injured when the roof of an under-construction plaza caved in in Anarkali on April 2. Three children died in a similar accident in Bhati Gate on July 20.

A four-year-old child died on October 16 when the roof of an under-construction house caved in in Shah Di Khooi, Johar Town. Four workers had died and 14 others injured on September 4 when the roof of a garments factory caved in.

As many as 45 workers were killed and 103 were injured when the roof of a three-storey factory collapsed in the Sunder Industrial Estate.

Drowned

As many as 38 people drowned and 253 were rescued by emergency services in 52 drowning incidents.

Two children – Waqar Hussain, 5, and Muawiyah, 4 – had drowned in a drain in front of their house in Civil Lines on January 3.

Ali Zarnab, 20, and Hassam Iqbal, 19, had drowned in the canal near Ferozepur Road on June 7. On the same day, Akmal, 5, had drowned in Ravi River when a boat capsised there.

Three children – Sajjal, Jamshaid and Adeel – drowned in River Ravi on August 9.

Road Accidents

In 44,123 road accidents, 463 people died and 2,383 were injured.
