Fanas is the brainchild of Sana Farooq. Although the brand came to fruition only a year ago, Sana has been stringing bespoke pieces together for almost six years now. She started off with allowing customers to help conceive the designs based on their preferences of style, medium and pricing.
“A unique selling point was imperative for launching the brand. Customised jewellery was our draw,” she tells The Express Tribune.
A mind of its own
People bring Sana images of designs they like and thus begins her creative process. “As a designer, I cannot copy designs entirely so I ask my customers to choose specific elements and then build up on them.” Instead of replicating designs, she comes up with options that are inspired by the choices of her buyers.
Sana’s thesis at the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design for jewellery designing and gemological sciences was undertaken after extensive market research on launching a jewellery brand. Her market-oriented approach followed her from her academic pursuits to professional endeavours. “I want jewellery to be given as much importance as clothes are. It should be showcased on multiple platforms.”
Accessorising up a storm
The bestsellers from her latest exhibition were her Persian fringes and feathered earrings, priced between Rs4,000 and Rs11,000. She is currently working on a new collection inspired by a series of coins along with another range using Swarovski crystals. The designer aims at taking her designs to the Pakistan Fashion Design Council platform next year. Of her designs, she shares, “They are trendy but not restricted to a certain age group.”
