Michael Hussey rolled back the years with a 59-ball 80 as he led his side Sydney Thunder to a comfortable 36-run win over Sydney Sixers in the opening Big Bash League match on Thursday.

Hussey opted to bat first after winning the toss and set about justifying that decision with a superb knock at one-down. Hussey was involved in handy partnerships with veteran all-rounders Jacques Kallis, who made 15 off 17 balls, and Shane Watson, who made 16 off 12 balls.

But he really came into his own when he was joined by Ben Rohrer (30) and took his side to a respectable 158-run score. Hussey hit five fours and four sixes in his man-of-the-match display.

Sixers got off to a good start but their batsmen gave precious little resistance once openers Brad Haddin (13) and Michael Lumb (34) were dismissed.

West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell claimed 3-13 in his four overs, while Watson also took 3-13 in two overs, to ensure the Sixers kept losing too many wickets to really be in the chase for long.
