PESHAWAR/ CHARSADDA:

A deputy superintendent from Charsadda was injured in an attack while a man was shot dead near MPA Hostel in separate incidents in the city on Saturday. A murderer of a polio worker and a suspected suicide bomber were also arrested the same day in separate operations.

CTD DSP injured

A DSP from the counter-terrorism department (CTD) Charsadda, Janzada Khan, was critically injured in a targeted attack in Qazi Kalay, within the jurisdiction of Faqirabad police station early Saturday morning. Police said Janzada was on his way to a dairy shop around 7am when a man carrying a handgun opened fire at him.

“He received two bullets and was critically injured while the assailant managed to flee,” a police official said, adding the DSP was rushed to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) after the incident. He was undergoing an operation to remove the bullets when this report was filed.

A 9mm pistol had been used in the attack, officials told The Express Tribune.

Police launched a search operation in the area following the attack but the assailant had managed to flee the scene.

However, banned group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan central spokesperson Muhammad Khurasani claimed the responsibility for the attack via email. “Our men targeted the CTD Charsadda in charge,” he said, while claiming responsibility for other targeted attacks in the country on Saturday.

Several officials of CTD have been targeted in 2015, including DSPs, constables and other police officials.

Man killed near MPA Hostel

Police said unidentified people opened fire at a car near MPA Hostel, killing Nisar Afridi on the spot while injuring Haji Gul and Kabir. The injured were rushed to LRH. “Nisar was a member of a banned militant outfit. However, he had surrendered and was no more wanted by the police,” the official quoted an injured Gul as saying.

Gul said Nisar was in the city for a court case when assailants opened fire at his car. “Nisar died on the spot while his driver Haji Gul was injured. Kabir, who was also injured, was a passerby and was caught in the crossfire,” a police official told The Express Tribune. Meanwhile, Gul could not identify the attacker. An FIR has been registered in the case.

CTD arrests target killer

CTD Peshawar arrested a wanted extortionist and target killer named Ibrahim during a raid in Hassan Garhi in the city on Saturday. He was wanted by the police in a number of cases.

Ibrahim lived in Garhi Fazale Haq within the jurisdiction of Mathra police station. A hand grenade and a pistol were seized from him and he was shifted to an undisclosed location after the arrest.

According to CTD officials, Ibrahim killed polio worker Amina in Shagai Hindkyan village on December 18, 2012. On March 5, 2014, he allegedly gunned down prayer leader Roohullah in Qaziabad, Mathra in yet another targeted killing. Ibrahim was also accused of the murder of a retired army officer in the jurisdiction of Mathra police.

Suicide bomber arrested

Intelligence agencies claimed to have uncovered a network of militants and arrested a suspected suicide bomber in possession of three suicide jackets. A man identified as Kamran was arrested from Charsadda. At the time of the arrest, Kamran was in possession of three suicide jackets, two pistols and three rifles.

Prior to the arrest, Kamran had opened fire on the authorities, after which a gun fight ensued. At the end of the crossfire, Kamran was caught and taken into custody.  An operation against the network of militants has been going on in Charsadda since last week.

Prang SHO Murtaza Khan told the media the operation is being conducted by intelligence agencies and the police is not playing any role in it.
