Locals said the teacher was known for his sense of duty and honesty. Muhammad Wazir has taught at schools in Kalash and retired from Government Middle School Sheikhanand.
“A teacher never retires and people like Muhammad Wazir live in the hearts [of students],” said the Chitral district education officer on the occasion. “We are proud to have a teacher like him who is passionate about educating children; we need more such teachers for the future [generations].”
Muhammad Wazir thanked the guests at the ceremony and wished other teachers good luck. “I tried to live up to my responsibilities and if for some reason I was unable to, I hope you will forgive me,” said the teacher to the audience. At the end of the event, he was sent to his house on a horse laden with gifts.
Buzkashi was also played on the occasion; it is a sport in which players mounted on horses drag the carcass of a goat of calf to the goal. The ceremony was organised by Bumboret High School Headmaster Kamaluddin and the district education officer was the chief guest. Teachers, education officers, nazims, councillors and students were in attendance.
