Baton-charge 17 sugarcane farmers injured during protest

Sugarcane growers protested outside CM House and demanded for the price of sugarcane to be increased to Rs185

KARACHI:

As many as 17 sugarcane farmers and growers were injured after being baton-charged by the police outside Chief Minister House on Saturday afternoon.

According to Sindh Chamber of Agriculture Mirpurkhas division president Haji Anwar Qaimkhani, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had ordered to sell the sugarcane at a fixed price of Rs180 per 40 kilogrammes throughout the country but the farmers in Sindh province are being forced to sell it at Rs155.

The sugarcane growers from every district of Sindh protested outside CM House and demanded for the price of sugarcane to be increased to Rs185.



Qaimkhani also demanded the CM to facilitate growers by ensuring the implementation of the prime minister’s orders. All the other provinces have implemented the premier’s orders, he added. The sit-in protest ended after the Sindh cane commissioner agreed to accept their demands as per the rules and regulations by Monday afternoon. However, if the government fails to notify the price of sugar cane on Monday, we will again protest on Saturday with even greater numbers, said Qaimkhani.
