An employee of the municipal committee committed suicide over the non-payment of salaries.
The deceased has been identified as Muhammad Hashim. According to insiders, he committed suicide by consuming poisonous tablets as he was unable to make ends meet.
Employees of the municipal committee have been protesting for the past five months over the government’s failure to pay their salaries. Many employees have been unable to make ends meet due to these delays.
Abdul Qayum, one of Hashim’s colleagues, told The Express Tribune, “Hashim had been disturbed and stressed for a long time because he was unable to deal with household expenditures.”
Qayum said, “Municipal committee employees have no money left and our families and our children’s education have been affected badly.”
He added, “We have been protesting for a long time but the government has failed to take action against our grievances.”
As news of Hashim’s death spread like wildfire, other protesting employees got enraged. They gathered outside the DC’s office along with the deceased’s body and blocked the main road on Traffic Chowk which connects DI Khan and South Waziristan.
