Jhang district : Independents have field day

PML-N trails behind independents in district council, secures majority in three of five municipal committees

FAISALABAD: Independent candidates had a field day in Jhang as they polled the highest number of seats in the district council and three of the five municipal committees.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz secured a simple majority in Jhang, Garh Maharaja and Ahmedpur Sial municipal committees.

Independents were elected on chairmen and vice-chairmen panels in 75 of the 91 seats in the district council. The remaining 16 seats were won by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) failed to win any seat in the district council as well as the five municipal committees.

Of the 109 seats in the five municipal committees, 65 were won by independent candidates and 44 by the PML-N ticket holders.

In Jhang municipal committee, the PML-N won majority with 19 seats. It was followed by the Rah-i-Haq Group that secured 14 seats. The remaining 17 seats were won by independents.

The PML-N won nine of the 13 wards in Garh Maharaja municipal committee (MC). The remaining four were won by independent candidates.

As many as seven of the 12 wards in Ahmadpur Sial municipal committee were won by the PML-N and the remaining five by independents.

Of the 23 wards in Shorkot municipal committee, 15 were won by independents and eight by PML-N ticket holders.

All 11 wards in the Athara Hazari municipal committee were won by independents.

Tehsil-wise division of district council seats

As many as 36 chairman and vice-chairman panels were won by independents and eight by the PML-N in Jhang tehsil. In Shorkot, the PML-N won only three seats against 17 won by independents. In Ahmadpur Sial, the PML-N won five seats and the remaining 11 were won by independents. Independents won on all 11 seats in Athara Hazari.

Faisal Saleh’s brother elected to district council

Makhdoom Asad Hayat, the younger brother of former Interior Minister Faisal Salah Hayat, was elected UC-1 chairman as an independent candidate. Asad Hayat is expected to run for the district council chairman.

Sheikh Akram’s three sons elected

Three sons of National Assembly Member (MNA) Sheikh Muhammad Akram have been elected to the Jhang municipal committee. According to the unofficial results available on Sunday, Sheikh Sheeraz Akram, Sheikh Fawwad Akram and Sheikh Nawaz Akram won general councillor seats from wards 14, 26 and 30, respectively. Sheikh Nawaz Akram is expected to be PML-N’s candidate for the municipal committee chairmanship. APP
