KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) continues its winning streak in Karachi’s local government elections by grabbing 134 of 209 union committees (UCs) so far, according to unofficial results.
Party leaders claim the MQM is on its way to have its own mayors and deputy mayors from all six districts of the metropolis with the help of alliances.
“For the first time in history, we would be having a mayor in all the districts of the city,” said party spokesperson Syed Aminul Haque.

Unofficial results indicate the party winning 50 out of 51 seats from Karachi’s Central district, whereas in Korangi it has so far clinched 34 of 37 seats.
In South district, the MQM leader claimed, party has emerged as the single largest party, winning 10 of 31 UCs. In East, it got 19 of 31, and in West, won 21 of 46 UCs.
“The MQM won in large numbers and by vast majority because it was forced to the wall. Karachi has responded to the brutalities by the power of their voting,” said the spokesperson.
Results for Malir district have not been received yet, Haque added.

In the elections, the party has defeated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s Karachi President Ali Zaidi and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI)’s Hafiz Naeemur Rehman.
The MQM also claimed to win all seven UCs in Landhi, despite earlier accusations that its rival, the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H), had taken over polling stations and was involved in bogus voting.
