FIA registers case against MQM chief for involvement in Dr Imran Farooq's murder

FIA nominates Muhammad Anwar, Iftikhar Hussain, Moazzam Ali Khan and Khalid Shamim as well

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) registered on Saturday a case against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain and other party leaders for alleged involvement in the murder of former party leader Dr Imran Farooq.

FIA's counter-terrorism wing in Islamabad has filed the case which has been registered under section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

Apart from the MQM chief, Muhammad Anwar, Iftikhar Hussain, Moazzam Ali Khan and Khalid Shamim have been nominated in the FIR.

Reacting to media reports of the case against the MQM chief, party spokesperson Aminul Haque said, "We heard heard about the case from media reports."

"The timing of the registration of the case is surprising, it seems like a mala fide intention," he added. Further, Haque questioned, "Cases are registered at the scene of crime then why was it registered in Pakistan." he questioned.

Earlier, Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan had stated that the federal government has decided to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) in Dr Imran Farooq murder case in Pakistan.

Dr Farooq was stabbed and bludgeoned to death near his apartment in Green Lane, Edgware, in September 2010. Investigators from the London Metropolitan Police, which has been investigating the assassination, flew into Pakistan in July and September this year to interrogate the suspects – Moazzam Ali Khan, Khalid Shamim and Mohsin Ali – who are in custody of Pakistan’s intelligence agencies.

Moazzam Ali, who had allegedly facilitated Farooq’s killers, was arrested in March from Karachi while Khalid Shamim and Mohsin Ali, were arrested by the Frontier Corps Balochistan in Chaman – a town on the border with Afghanistan.

“The decision to lodge an FIR in Pakistan has been taken after observing London police’s silence on the fate of the three suspects. British authorities did not make any request for the extradition of these suspects,” Pakistan’s security czar told a news conference on Tuesday.

A | 8 years ago | Reply This seems deplorable that a murder happened in London and the case is now registered in Pakistan against MQM leaders and workers because the outcome was not as per to the wishes of Choudhry Nisar. But at the same time no one is charged when fourteen P.A.T workers were killed in Lahore, I think they were human beings too.

omar | 8 years ago | Reply @john. Explain to me this. This murder occured in the UK and of a UK citizen. The London Police do not hold Altaf Hussain as a suspect, so why was this case registered. Also, why was this case registered on the day of elections and on the day when an MQM worker was killed by torture under the rangers custody. I think your opinion on MQM is extremely biased. You call it a fascist society. Why? It is the only party that is made up of middles class, educated people. It always stands for minorities - they even give protection to the whorship places of minorities. If you do not believe me, then may be you should talk to minority leaders in Karachi .Moreover, when the MQM was in power, between 2003 and 2008, Karachi saw immense amount of develpment and that development was seen across the baord, including non-urdu speaking areas. So why such prejudice against the MQM. MQM is also the only party that wants land redistribution.

Hashmi | 8 years ago | Reply With the British authorities definitely having better capability and reputation for investigating cases, the enthusiasm of Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to take the matter of investigation of murder of Dr. Imran Farooq in Pakistani (his) hands does not make much sense, more so when the crime has been committed on British soil. We also have to keep in mind that right from the early days of Pakistan, and starting with the murder of first prime minister Liquat Ali Khan and ending with that of Benaziar Bhutto – with very many in between and beyond – no murder investigation has been satisfactorily concluded.. And how capable Chaudhry is was seen clearly by Pakistanis when he took personal charge of ‘operation’ against gunman Sikandar who, with his wife and two kids, kept making the authorities look like fools nearly the whole day, in a most sensitive place like country’s capital, and the drama ended only with the unscheduled interruption of Zamarrud Khan. There have been reports that many of Nawaz Sharif’s team senior members have serious difference among them and perhaps feeling unhappy over the formation of a grievance redressal committee - which matter was successfully kept pending for around two years despite agreement over the need for such a committee right a the start – Chaudhry Nisar has made a move to devise means to put additional pressure on MQM with a view to winning the favour of you-know-who, who had obviously been unhappy over the formation of such a committee. And like Saulat Mirza was given exceptional facilities even inside the death cells, and brought back from the gallows a few times, perhaps persons who have been in Pakistani custody for long in connection with Dr. Imran Farooq murder case could be used for this purpose. The only reason why this case was registered today was to try and damage the victory that the MQM is likely to get in the LG elections.

John | 8 years ago | Reply What baffles me is that MQM supporters should be happy that the killers of one of MQM's founding members are being marrowed down but instead they start feeling the heat and thats because apart from being MQM supporter they are also required to play Altaf Hussain's apologists and boy they do a good dedicated job,poor souls.But i cant offer any sympathy for the likes of to Imran Farooque Sb or Azeem Tariq,they brought it on themselves when they joined a fascist cult like MQM in the first place.MQM is a one way street unless you are Nabeel Gabol.
