Fifth-grade students arrested in US for allegedly planning explosion

Reports say device recovered from fifth-grade students was filled with vinegar and cinnamon

Five fifth-grade students in New Jersey were arrested on Thursday after police claimed to have detonated an explosive device during an assembly at a nearby high school.

"It wasn't a prank," police spokesperson Robert Bracken said.

Authorities said 10- and 11-year-olds at Clifton Elementary School 11 intended to 'cause damage', local news channel Pix 11 reported.



Police reports say the plan was exposed as a teacher discovered a written plan, outlining an attack at Clifton High School, following which the school cancelled its assembly.

However, WABC said the authorities claimed that the device recovered from the students was filled with vinegar and cinnamon, rather than any actual explosives.



Despite the material being found inside the device, police reportedly found enough 'criminal intent' to take the students into custody, followed by their suspension from school.

Though the children were released, what charges, if any, they may face is yet to be decided.
