I appeal to the authorities to order the construction of a much-needed overhead bridge on the main national highway
KARACHI: Residents of Sindhi Jamaat Cooperative Housing Society and neighbouring areas staged a demonstration in front of Karachi Press Club on November 13 to protest the killing of a nine-year-old school girl, Aqsa Panhwar. Aqsa was hit by a truck while crossing the main National Highway in front of the housing society (District Malir) after attending school. This is not the first incident of its kind. In the recent past, two other schoolchildren were also killed while crossing the main highway in the area. The Society has at least three schools and there is heavy traffic when many children, after attending school, try to cross the main highway in order to return to their homes on the other side.
Around six years ago, I had written to the KMC asking it to construct an overhead bridge in front of the Society. I got a reply saying that my request has been forwarded to the department concerned. However, no further action has been taken on this issue even after the passage of more than six years. On behalf of the residents of the area, I appeal to the Sindh minister for local bodies, the commissioner Karachi, the KMC administrator and other officials concerned to help the people of the area in saving the lives of schoolchildren and others by constructing a much-needed overhead bridge on the main National Highway in front of Sindhi Jamat Cooperative Housing Society. I request that this project is initiated and completed on a priority basis.
