There is a dire need for our citizenry to hold itself accountable, keep aware of rules and regulations and follow them
ISLAMABAD: Road accidents are a leading cause of death, especially in the larger cities of Pakistan such as Karachi, where traffic rules are regularly disregarded with abandon. Every day, we hear via media reports, about road accidents and their consequences. We live in a society where rules and regulations are rarely followed and hardly ever given any importance. This is due to a lack of awareness by drivers as well as administrative failure to implement laws.
Road accidents mostly are due to overloading of vehicles, the lack of an effective traffic control system, unlicensed driving and poorly constructed roads. There is a dire need for our citizenry to hold itself accountable, keep aware of rules and regulations and follow them. We must reiterate the importance of safe driving. Traffic rules must be strictly implemented and heavy fines imposed on those who violate rules, such as breaking signals and driving without a licence.
