Ethics demand these students are taken board, their concerns addressed, advantages of decision to merge be told.
KARACHI: This is with reference to your report of December 31 titled “Three hospitals and medical college to put up a fight against merger”.
Many students currently studying in Sindh Medical College (SMC) turned down admission in private medical colleges and chose to study there because of its affiliation with the Dow University of Health Sciences. Hence, it will be wrong to force these students to study in a university they had not chosen to study in. This may happen if SMC is elevated to a university, as outlined in the 18th amendment, thereby losing its affiliation with Dow. Ethics demand that these students are taken on board, their concerns addressed and the advantages of a decision to merge be told to them.
It has been less than a decade since the DUHS came into being and now people are talking of having another university. We may not be able to do much about decisions that have already been taken but we can try and prevent bad ones from happening in future.
