Living next to the president

Letter January 03, 2011
My friends call me fortunate when I tell them that I live in Karachi’s most secure location.

KARACHI: My friends call me fortunate when I tell them that I live in Karachi’s most secure location, opposite Bilawal House in Clifton. They think I live in peace and tranquility and that my electricity never goes.

The reality is quite different, however. Prior to President Zardari’s visit to Karachi, all roads leading to his residence are cordoned off, shops ordered to close, barriers erected and a severe restraint is placed on all activity around the residence.

Not only is one side of the road blocked, even roads on the other side leading to apartments and a large commercial area have been barricaded. While I understand that the president of the country needs to have a certain level of security, do its taxpayers deserve to live like this?
