Road accidents and reckless driving

Letter October 25, 2015
Drivers crossing the speed limit should have their driving licences seized and heavy fines should be imposed on them

KARACHI: The number of road accidents in the country is increasing rapidly, resulting in many deaths. The government needs to act immediately to control such preventable deaths. To fix the problem, I suggest the following:

1) Drivers crossing the speed limit should have their driving licences seized and heavy fines should be imposed on them; 2) main roads should be widened with arrangements for two-way traffic made on as many roads as possible; 3) encroachments on roads, which block the free flow of traffic, must be removed; 4) awareness programmes highlighting the need for safe driving and appropriate vehicle operation practices for motorcycles, cars and buses should be conducted on radio and television.
