The differently-abled

Letter October 21, 2015
Humans are the species that have affected the planet the most (whether in a good way or bad)

LAHORE: A seal gives birth to two babies. One is limp in its right flipper and struggles to survive. Yet, instead of assisting the differently-abled child, the mother leaves it to die while focusing on the other baby’s nourishment. This is a common phenomenon in nature. However, when it comes to humans, such actions are highly condemned today to such an extent that no person would even think of doing that. Most human mothers would give the differently-abled child more preference. So, which course of action is correct? Leaving the tortoise behind or possibly preventing the hare from reaching its full potential by giving it divided attention?

Humans are the species that have affected the planet the most (whether in a good way or bad). The fact that we are the only species in the known galaxy that can communicate effectively, make machines that can communicate on our behalf and make machines to make still more machines that can communicate on our behalf, is proof that we are, by far, the most intelligent beings. And the fact that ours is not an endangered species proves that we are successful as a whole. So, honouring the differently-abled and providing them with rights and even privileges, even at the cost of others, should not be a hindrance to society. Granting privileges to the poor, the differently-abled and orphans will not result in any major setback for the human civilisation. We must make sure that they are taken care of.
