Integrating FATA (II)

Letter October 03, 2015
The writer seems well-informed about the state of Fata with regard to the Constitution of Pakistan

PESHAWAR: With reference to the article by Arshad Mahmood, the writer seems well-informed about the state of Fata with regard to the Constitution of Pakistan as well as when it comes to our international obligations. It is time to end the isolation of Fata and draw these areas into the mainstream. For the said purpose, amendments should be made to Articles 1, 246 and 247 of the Constitution, to ensure protection of the fundamental rights of the people of Fata, including women and children. As such, the president of Pakistan, the government and all elected representatives should look into the issue of Fata reforms in light of the demands of the people there and Pakistan’s international obligations. We should recommit ourselves to bringing genuine reforms in accordance with the wishes of the people of Fata.

This could help bring greater order within these territories and end the legal chaos that has, for so long, made the lives of the people a constant nightmare.
