Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan views about induction of more countries, particularly India, lack pragmatism
LAHORE: Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan recently expressed his apprehensions about the role of permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. His views about the induction of more countries, particularly India, lack pragmatism. How can a country that has been ignoring the charter of the UN regarding Kashmir, for more than six decades, be included in such a prestigious group? Moreover, the two nuclear South Asian arch-rivals are already feeling the heat at their borders, due to regular skirmishes. How can we rule out the possibility of India’s biased approach if it is inducted into the elite group of the Security Council? The UN must upgrade the powers of the General Assembly rather than increasing the number of members on the UN Security Council.
