Country and behaviour

Letter December 28, 2010
All those who are commenting need to understand that Ms Malik is a Pakistani despite whatever we say about her.

SURREY, BC, CANADA: This is with regard to the ongoing debate on Veena Malik’s behaviour on Indian television in your newspaper and with particular reference to Zainab Imam’s article of December 28 titled “Veena Malik does not represent me”. All those who are commenting need to understand that Ms Malik is a Pakistani despite whatever we say about her not going to India in a capacity as a representative of Pakistan.

In fact, people who call her a representation of Pakistan have more ground to stand on than those who say she doesn’t simply because what one regards as a true representation of Pakistan is a subjective issue, whereas her upbringing in Pakistan and her national identity as a Pakistani is an objective reality.

Let’s condemn her behaviour, if we must, on grounds that are a little more rational than her gender, race, age and/or national identity.
