Tax deadlines: same old story

Letter September 07, 2015
It is high time Pakistanis started respecting deadlines and, more importantly, the value of people’s time

KARACHI: I filed my tax returns on August 31, 2015, which was the last date for the filing of tax returns for salaried persons. Later that afternoon, the government made the all too familiar announcement that the date for filing tax returns by salaried persons has been extended to September 30, 2015. I request the finance minister to announce at least one of the following:

1) All salaried persons who abided by the law and filed their tax returns on time and thus put in extra effort to meet the deadline, be given a tax credit of five per cent; 2) impose a penalty of five per cent of the tax liability on all those who did not file their tax returns by the due date; 3) hold the management at the Federal Board of Revenue, which is responsible for the enforcement of tax returns filing process, accountable for failing in its duties.

It is high time Pakistanis started respecting deadlines and, more importantly, the value of people’s time.
