Neglected education sector

Letter September 01, 2015
The government should start proper training programmes for teachers, and besides increasing the education budget

KARACHI: Pakistan is setting records in all arenas — whether it is in the making of the world’s third-largest nuclear programme, or gaining popularity in sports. However, we fail to set any records in education. Currently, only 2.3 per cent of the budget is allocated to education, of which about 70 per cent is absorbed by the education ministry’s luxuries. The budget rarely is the cause of any progresses in the education sector, even though providing education for all is a constitutional requirement. Government schools are only showpieces and the school curriculum does not equip the younger generation fully to meet the challenges of the future.

The government should start proper training programmes for teachers, and besides increasing the education budget, should ensure that it is utilised judiciously.
