Gendering crime

Letter August 25, 2015
The kind of opprobrium directed against her on social media at times seems to be as a result of her gender

LAHORE: Whenever there is a new scandal, our social media intellectuals start drawing certain needless and quite harmful comparisons. One such example is the case of supermodel Ayan Ali. The kind of opprobrium directed against her on social media at times seems to be as a result of her gender rather than because of her alleged crimes. This is a reminder of our staunchly patriarchal social structure that does not want to see women succeed in their careers.

There is no denying the fact that women have very limited platforms to display their talents. At the same time, focusing on gender in every situation is completely needless. Whosoever is found guilty of a crime must be dealt with appropriately. There is no need to vilify someone just on the basis of their gender.
