Child protection awareness

Letter August 17, 2015
Under the Police Order of 2002, it is the duty of law-enforcement agencies to protect children and women

PESHAWAR: The senseless and inhuman act of indecency in Kasur reminds us all why there is a desperate need to protect children from sexual abuse and harassment. In every society, beasts in the form of human beings pounce to get their hands on innocent children. Throughout the world, sexual harassment awareness and protection programmes for children are being run both by civil society organisations and government institutions. However, the effort by these two entities only bears fruit when parents and teachers, too, fulfill their responsibilities towards children.

As for the police’s responsibility, under the Police Order of 2002, it is the duty of law-enforcement agencies to protect children and women from all kinds of harassment and abuse. In this regard, a separate law should be enacted, containing not only provisions regarding protection for women and children, but also severe punishments for the offenders.
