Water wastage

Letter August 15, 2015
I urge local water management, conservation authorities to take immediate measures to thoroughly examine water tankers

KARACHI: Contrary to what recent downpours may suggest, every citizen would agree that drought-like conditions prevail in Karachi for most of the year. In a situation like this, water conservation holds high importance. The other day, I was alarmed to see a water tanker at a traffic signal leaking water relentlessly. As the traffic light turned green, the truck rushed away, leaving a wet trail behind. Either the driver did not have the faintest of clues about the leaking water or he simply did not want to address the issue. In a city where clean water is a precious resource, this is a common sight. Vessels carrying water are subjected to negligence and, consequently, water wastage has emerged as a huge problem.

With the recent boom of the water tanker industry, this problem threatens to occur at a large scale. I urge local water management and conservation authorities to take immediate measures to thoroughly examine water tankers for leaks and, thereby, allow only those trucks to operate that have ensured no wastage will occur during transport. For every drop of water we save, a drop more we have.
