Besides the matter of fixing responsibility for this crime, there is also a dire need to curb this menace
KARACHI: As the case of 280 sexually-abused children in Kasur surfaced, the political leadership began a blame game, in an attempt to conceal its incompetence and unwillingness to apprehend the guilty. There is no doubt that the illicit actions which came to light are proof of the Punjab government’s incompetence, under whose nose such heinous crimes have occurred.
Besides the matter of fixing responsibility for this crime, there is also a dire need to curb this menace. First of all, the culprits should be brought to justice without any further delay. For that matter, sending this case to a military court won’t be a bad idea. Secondly, the authorities concerned need to work with children’s rights NGOs to devise effective strategies to root out this menace. Thirdly, laws should be enacted to protect children from violence, abuse — verbal or physical — and child labour. Last, but most importantly, implementation of these child protection laws should be the first priority of the government.
