Militant wings of political parties

Letter July 24, 2015
We cannot claim to have a democracy in the country unless such behaviour of political parties is reformed

ISLAMABAD: One hears these days that many Pakistani political parties have militant wings. Party leaders claim they are willing to get rid of any undesirable elements within their parties and that the authorities are at liberty to catch hold of them and punish them. However, whenever the authorities arrest such persons, party leaders either claim that the person is innocent or plainly disown them.

Political members of such parties are dependent on militant wings for the strength and protection of their parties. To admit the presence of rogue elements in the party and, yet, to show allegiance to a party leader who also heads these elements does not make sense. It is important that politicians free themselves from this duality of behaviour. This is also true for parties whose leaders are openly involved in corruption. We cannot claim to have a democracy in the country unless such behaviour of political parties is reformed.
