Save Hamal Lake

Letter July 22, 2015
An influential politician from Sindh has illegally occupied the Hamal Lake situated in Qambar Shahdadkot district

KARACHI: It has been reported that an influential politician from Sindh has illegally occupied the Hamal Lake situated in Qambar Shahdadkot district. He has allegedly stopped the filling of the lake, has sealed its gates and turned the water flow through streams towards the outside of the lake. The siphoning off the lake’s water resource is drastically affecting the people of the area, as well as its ecosystem.

The Hamal Lake is famous for fish, birds and various types of trees. It is the only survival source for the people of the Kachho and Kohistan areas of Dadu and Qambar Shahdadkot. There are thousands of trees by the lake and the influential individual wants to chop them down. To access the trees, the individual wants to first empty the lake, which is a resource for the area’s various fish and bird species. The people of the area use the lake for drinking water, livestock and cultivation of small-scale farms through machines. It is the responsibility of the government to preserve the country’s habitat. I request that it works to save the Hamal Lake.
