Language barrier in schools

Letter December 20, 2010
What the author has pointed out is true. I am a witness to this situation.

ISLAMABAD: This is with respect to the article published on December 20 titled, “Drawbacks of teaching Pashtu in Swat schools” by Zubair Torwali. I am a witness to this situation. In a survey, we interacted with 95 primary school teachers who neither read nor write Pashtu. If this is the case with teachers, what would be the case of the children who are forced to receive education in a language they do not know?

We obtained signatures by teachers and residents of the community to replace Pashtu with their respective mother tongue; till a fully developed curriculum is available in local languages, Urdu should be used as medium of instruction instead of Pashtu.

What the author has pointed out is true and we must take a stand for this in order to stop further degradation in the already sorry state of education.
