Zebra crossings

Letter July 12, 2015
There are no zebra crossings along the Metro Bus service routes to facilitate pedestrians

ISLAMABAD: The people of the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi are feeling much comfort after the recent inauguration of Metro Bus service. This project has many facilities for passengers, including bridges at different points and crossings for the bus service. The buses also pass through the Blue Area, which is an important business hub of Islamabad.

However, there are no zebra crossings along the Metro Bus service routes to facilitate pedestrians. This creates a dangerous situation as there are no designated areas for pedestrians to cross, engendering the risk of accidents. The distinguishing feature of zebra crossings, which are used all over the world, is their alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface, from which it derives its name. A zebra crossing, typically, gives priority or ‘right of way’ to pedestrians. The authorities are requested to pay heed to this issue faced by Blue Area visitors and shopkeepers and make arrangements for marking zebra crossings at various points in Blue Area. This is an important, immediate matter as it concerns the safety of people.
