Why import speed-breakers?

Letter July 09, 2015
The authorities concerned are requested to consider installing long-lasting speed-breakers made of tough tiles

RAWALPINDI: Some months ago, authorities in Rawalpindi and the National Highway Authority did a commendable job of installing speed-breakers at the U-turn on Jhelum Road near Golf Road. This U-turn is well known for having caused countless minor, major and fatal accidents in the past, which could have been avoided if speed-breakers had been installed in the area in a timely manner.

Unfortunately, the metal speed-breakers that were eventually installed and which are imported are breaking up and allowing vehicles to over-speed endangering public safety. The authorities concerned are requested to consider installing long-lasting speed-breakers made of tough tiles similar to the ones installed at Bahria Town Phase VII and DHA-I, Islamabad, which slow down traffic, but at the same time facilitate a smooth drive, unlike imported speed-breakers that cause severe jerks and possible damage to tyres even when driving at very slow speeds.
