Humiliation of humanity

Letter July 05, 2015
We have a section of society that is desperate for small morsels of food

ISLAMABAD: This letter is about human dignity, which holds no value in Pakistan. A recent event that occurred in Islamabad just before Ramazan left me perturbed and very humbled. I watched a fancy car stopping close to some labourers sitting on the roadside. The driver stepped out of his car and began taking food out of his trunk. The ravenous labourers ran to him to snatch the bags of food, while some returned with gloomy looks on their faces for missing out on the opportunity to nourish themselves, being unsuccessful in grabbing a bag during the ‘contest’.

It is sad that as a society and culture that places heavy emphasis on there being exorbitant quantities of food at social events, we have a section of society that is desperate for small morsels of food. I can hardly imagine what these people must be going through during the holy month while other people satisfy themselves with delectable and varied edibles, leaving the impoverished groups watching.
