Doctors’ strike in K-P

Letter June 15, 2015
These are doctors who take an oath that they would never refuse treatment to a patient in need

D I KHAN: My nephew was recently hospitalised at the Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar for an ear infection. Doctors recommended an operation for the said infection. Soon thereafter, the doctors in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa went on strike in order to make the provincial government accede to their demands.

My nephew has been hospitalised for the past few days; the operation was due to take place on June 13. We have been told that since all doctors are on strike, we should go home and return when the strike ends. This was unfortunate, not just for our family, but for a lot of patients, since many had come to the hospital for treatment from faraway towns. I don’t belong to any political party though I had begun liking the slogans of change. But, I was wrong. People become fooled every time by impressive slogans of various political parties which fail to produce actual results. It is a responsibility of the government to provide people with basic facilities like education, health and justice. I believe that the government has failed to provide the above-cited facilities. Furthermore, I am astonished to observe the doctors’ behaviour towards their patients. These are doctors who take an oath that they would never refuse treatment to a patient in need. Is this the change that the government promised? There should be no bargaining at the cost of helpless patients.
