Introduce state-owned buses and have them operate on major routes of the metropolis
KARACHI: I would like to draw the attention of the authorities concerned towards public transportation issues faced by the country’s largest city, Karachi. Public transport is, indeed, a lifeline for millions of Karachiites who use it to commute to their jobs, schools and other destinations. Every citizen cannot afford cars, motorcycles or other private transport; that is why they rely on public transport, especially buses.
But in Karachi’s buses passengers are being treated like animals and frequently are unable to find a place to sit. They are often forced to travel on the roofs of buses and the situation becomes more torturous when CNG is unavailable — which happens at least three times a week causing disruption in bus schedules and availability, resulting in difficulties for commuters. I see hundreds of people standing at bus stops waiting long periods of time for their transport.
My suggestion, therefore, to government officials relevant to public transportation in Karachi is to introduce state-owned buses and have them operate on major routes of the metropolis.
