Angela Merkel on Pakistan — in India

Letter December 13, 2010
Those upset by Merkel’s remarks should console themselves by understanding the whole world wants India’s market.

KALGOORLIE, AUSTRALIA: Those upset by German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s remarks about Pakistan during her visit to India — “Toeing Indian line: Terror as state policy unacceptable, says Merkel” — should console themselves by understanding that the whole world wants to tap India’s vast market. That will help explain the Pakistan-bashing, since India right now has the money to buy billions of dollars of goods and services from western countries.

And this is precisely what the latter want because they are facing their worst economic downturn since
World War II. Riots have occurred recently in France, Britain and Greece and all are linked to economic conditions.

The way I see it, these countries and their leaders will keep pandering to India’s ego as long as it is in a position to buy their products.
