Doctor arrested for alleged blasphemy

Letter December 13, 2010
The arrest of a doctor in Hyderabad on alleged blasphemy is a mockery of the law and our legal justice system.

KARACHI: The arrest of a doctor in Hyderabad on alleged blasphemy is a mockery of the law and our legal justice system. By all accounts, he has been accused of blaspheming after he threw a visiting card of a sales representative in the dustbin. The card had the man’s name, the first being the same as that of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). The doctor reportedly apologised to the sales representatives saying that his action was accidental and he did not mean to hurt his religious feelings.

The latter is said to have accepted the apology but the police still pressed ahead and arrested the doctor — and now it is blaming local religious leaders.

What kind of bigoted and intolerant society are we living in?
