Operation ‘Get the Mugger’ could rid the city of a cancer that reflects rather poorly on the police and its citizens
KARACHI: The Sindh police deserve praise for its prompt and professional response to the massacre at Safoora Goth. Riding on their recent success, the Sindh police could easily launch another operation that will eliminate the single largest source of insecurity amongst the citizens of Karachi — muggings at traffic intersections in broad daylight and in full public view.
This basic operation has been successfully implemented in many countries of the world. Begin by identifying 20-30 of the most troubled intersections. Place two policemen with stun guns at each of these intersections in a position so that they have a full view of the location. Surveillance cameras at each intersection are closely monitored from a central control room. As soon as a mugging is observed, the control room informs the policeman on duty who uses hi stun gun to disable and arrest the culprits. The nearby police mobiles are simultaneously called. If the mugging is first observed by the police on duty, it could directly take the same actions. The camera evidence should be enough to prosecute the culprit, who should be brought to justice in a matter of days and not years.
Taken seriously, operation ‘Get the Mugger’ could rid the city of a cancer that reflects rather poorly on the police and the citizens of Karachi.
