Befriending our neighbours

Letter December 11, 2010
Pakistan has closer historical and ethnic ties with neighbouring Iran and Afghanistan than Saudi Arabia.

KARACHI: I write with reference to your report of December 8 titled “External actors: Saudi Arabia’s covert role in Pakistan”.

Pakistan has closer historical and ethnic ties with neighbouring Iran and Afghanistan. We have deep religious ties with Saudi Arabia. Hence, it is clearly in our interests to have good relations with these three countries. Pakistan has sacrificed its good relations with Afghanistan and Iran for the Taliban and by now it should have realised that this is not good for Pakistan.

Quaid-i-Azam wanted a moderate and modern Muslim state but instead we are moving away from that cherished goal.
