Smart strategy

Letter May 17, 2015
Frustration of both Pakistan and Afghanistan has reached its zenith due to their common unscrupulous enemy

HYDERABAD: Pakistan’s vigorous warnings to the Afghan Taliban can be seen as a positive change in the country’s defence strategies. Pakistan has not only been surrounded by the menace of militancy, but the beast crawls all around its soil. In such conditions, Pakistan cannot afford in any way to allow India strengthening its stronghold in Afghanistan. To reduce India’s importance in Afghanistan, Pakistan must take quick, amiable steps to improve relations with our western neighbour. If India further strengthens its position in Afghanistan, we will end up having heavy Indian influence on both our eastern and western borders, and the Taliban inside and outside the region surrounding Pakistan in their grasp. Such conditions would pose a great challenge for Pakistan.

The frustration of both Pakistan and Afghanistan has reached its zenith due to their common unscrupulous enemy. The steps that Pakistan has taken in this regard in recent times are highly commendable. If all goes well, the virus of terrorism and militancy will be eliminated and the region will hopefully see some stability.
