KARACHI: What a nice article on the capital of Portugal by Amna Yamin in the current issue of The Express Tribune Magazine. It stirred up memories of a memorable visit to Lisboa Antiga during my student days. It was a long, long time ago and took place during my holidays from university — when places off the beaten track beckoned me — Budapest, Valencia, Lisbon. I wasn’t all that keen on historical buildings, as American or Japanese tourists often are, and I have found their insistence on requiring precise information a little tedious.
I have always preferred cafe life, and in Lisboa Antiga it was sardines, olives and the juice of the grape… and of course, listening to Fados — the Soul of Portugal. All it needed was a Portuguese guitar, a Spanish acoustic guitar and a singer sharing a Saudade Fado with the audience. The photograph of Tram, 28, which Amna included in her travelogue touched a familiar chord, though I believe it had a different number during my visit. I would be most interested to read anything else that Amna might write about her wanderlust years.
