Army and country

Letter December 09, 2010
Equating the Pakistan Army to a bunch of mercenaries is a gross insult to the institution

ISLAMABAD: George Fulton’s article of December 7 titled “Army and country” shows that the writer is a relative newcomer to Pakistan. There he needs more time to understand the prevailing dynamics. It would be fair to say that the army is not a holy cow and unwarranted army-bashing serves little or no purpose.  As for his saying that “all countries have armies and in our case the army has a country”, I would say this is an ill-conceived statement that cannot be corroborated by any imaginable yardstick. In any case, if that were so, isn’t the same true for America where the Pentagon and the CIA call all the shots?

Moreover equating the Pakistan Army to a bunch of mercenaries is a gross insult to the institution and I would request Mr Fulton to think before speaking because words once uttered can never come back.
