Parliament on Yemen

Letter April 11, 2015
The joint resolution is a victory for all peace-loving people — a win-win situation for everyone

KARACHI: The unanimously adopted resolution by parliament urging the government to mediate a peaceful resolution on Yemen is a welcome development. The landmark decision is clear evidence of the supremacy of a sovereign parliament. The political maturity of the prime minister indicates his seriousness towards changing the orthodox trends of political culture in Pakistan. Instead of striking covert deals in isolation, he acknowledged the role of parliament in these crucial times.

Our parliament also deserves appreciation for building up consensus that Pakistan should stand by Saudi Arabia in all turbulent times but should mediate between the two Muslim countries while maintaining neutrality. Constructive roles played by organisations such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the UN Security Council in this potentially dangerous war are also important. The joint resolution is a victory for all peace-loving people — a win-win situation for everyone.
