Unethical discourse

Letter April 08, 2015
All the members of parliament should keep themselves away from personal grudges on the floor of the House

LAHORE: The discussion on the grave issue of the Yemen conflict in our parliament has been quite haphazard so far, so much so that the public has not been able to squeeze any fruitful material from the discussion that has taken place. It was indicative of the priorities that our lawmakers have when we were made to witness such unethical actions and responses by them. The parliamentarians represent the people of Pakistan who elected them. They are responsible for maintaining the esteem and sanctity of parliament.

It was quite astounding to find parliamentarians mocking and shouting at one another in a highly indecent manner. Our defence minister, in a fit of fury, criticised the members of the PTI in an abrasive manner. While the PTI may have assailed the ruling party in a similar manner during the sit-in in Islamabad, as far as parliament is concerned, nobody should be allowed to speak in the rude manner employed by the defence minister. The crucial discussion on the Yemen conflict slipped into the background. No concrete consensus has been reached so far due to unnecessary criticism thrown at one another. We are still caught between the devil and the deep sea on the Yemen issue. All the members of parliament should keep themselves away from personal grudges on the floor of the House so that a solid solution to the Yemen conflict can be found.
