Learning from Lee Kuan Yew

Letter March 30, 2015
Leaders like Lee Kuan Yew chose to build castles in the hearts and minds of their people

LAHORE: It is a tragedy that after the Quaid’s untimely death, Pakistan did not have even one leader with the integrity and commitment of Lee Kuan Yew. We have never had a leader who made efforts to lead the country on the path of technological and economic self-reliance through sustained human resource development. It took just one man to transform Singapore from a black hole in 1965 to a leading economic giant in Asia by the 1990s. We can only hope and pray that someone finally comes to our rescue and restores some sanity and ensures that the rule of law and adherence to the Constitution prevail in Pakistan. Our politicians, it seems, are too busy in attending to their own personal interests to care about where Pakistan, as a country, is headed.

Leaders like Lee Kuan Yew chose to build castles in the hearts and minds of their people, while those who held the highest public offices in Pakistan decided to build palatial villas in the Gulf states, France and the UK. We can only hope one day we have as dazzling a fate as Singapore’s.
