Musharraf’s interview

Letter March 24, 2015
One needs to get the pawns and remove them and then go after the leaders, before the pawn becomes too hot to handle

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to General (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s interview published in The Express Tribune on March 22 titled “For Karachi peace, catch the big fish” with a subtitle “Missing chess pieces”. In his interview, the former president stated: “They [Saulat Mirza and Uzair Baloch] are just pawns in the big game who play for others and get killed.” At the same time he said, “We need a leader to catch the big fish and bring them to justice.”

The implication of the two taken together is to ignore the ‘pawns’ and go after the ‘big fish’. One would not expect General (retd) Musharraf to lose complete sight of strategy. It is extremely short-sighted to ignore the pawns and only go after the bigwigs and the powerful. He should remember that one of the lowly pawns of today may well become the bigwig at the end of the game. One needs to get the pawns and remove them and then go after the leaders, before the pawn becomes too hot to handle.
